Zach transcripts analysis support (for those who haven't yet completed it or those who would like a different take on it)

Belateds,

this was meant to be a task that allowed me to see what terminology and theory you knew and how well you picked quotes from the data and theories to use to support an exploration of what was interesting about those conversations. If you need help to get started and use this framework, that is going to be reflected in the grade. Use quotes and 4-6 terms in every main paragraph, if possible.

Intro - contrast the two contexts (who, what activities, what age etc.) and suggest what change there is shown in Zach's speech (give an overview) - point out anything puzzling as 'interesting' and be sure to explore it in the essay

para 1 - explore a contrast of Chomsky and Skinner by finding examples of how H supports Z's language development using positive and negative reinforcement OF HIS LANGUAGE USE, NOT HIS BEHAVIOUR and how far this seems effective, contrasting with Zach's non-standard uses that he wouldn't have heard from an adult, that seem to support Chomsky's ideas or at least contradict Skinner's.

para 2 - work out the MLU for something e.g. open vs closed question responses and explore the value of Bruner's ideas about interaction through looking at H's CDS (child-directed speech), contrasting with Piaget's ideas about 'readiness'

para 3 - look at the effect of context (activity, asymmetrical power, gender, egocentrism of young children, illness etc.) on Z's language use, linking to relevant theories tentatively and offering alternative explanations as possiblities - use Halliday and Dore to label contextual functions of speech, showing where those functions contrast and are ambiguous

conclusion - suggest what features of language indicate where in the development from telegraphic to post-telegraphic stage Z is and how far he may be being supported in his development
