Excalmation marks - how many do you use?

Here is a link to a BBC News article that mentions your friend and mine, DAVID CRYSTAL!!!!!!

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-23781044

Notice how often you use them and in which contexts (I use too many in my text messages and have to edit to remove them where I think friends will judge I have gone overboard...). I decided to use an ellipsis instead of a full stop or exclamation mark there. What impression do you think I am trying to create of my state of mind?

Do you use emoticons as well? Instead? How difficult is it to judge the tone of a message that does not contain them? Please comment if you have any examples (remember to respect the confidentiality of anyone whose text you want to quote).

  1. I don't use exclamation marks often, I think for me it depends on who I'm texting and the topic of the conversation like if I'm really embarrassed and I need to convey that to my friend in an obvious way even if I'm over reacting. I use emoticons more but I think that's because it is hard to convey emotion in a text especially sarcasm which is a constraint of the form, I find it hard to be sarcastic in a text without one of my friends actually taking me seriously.
