British politeness anecdote by Douglas Adams (LC)

Douglas Adams (sadly deceased) is one of my favourite authors. This anecdote is useful for Language Change because it examines what is socially acceptable at the time the text was written - would you mention it if the person opposite you took one of your biscuits?
