This kind of reminds me of the whole internet 'Grammar Nazi' culture. I think it also links in with hyper-correct grammar in order to attain prestige. In the case of Grammar Nazis, I often get the feeling that any grammar corrections are made not in the pursuit of spreading learning, but rather undermining the intelligence of the one not being hyper-correct, and therefore undermining their comment. A face threatening act, I suppose?
